What is VIPKid?
VIPKid is an online platform for English language learning. It is a Chinese-based company that connects North American teachers with Chinese students through 25 minute lessons. You can teach English online to Chinese students from the comfort of your own home! I like to call VIPKid the “Uber of teaching”! Their slogan is “Part-time teaching, Full-time fun” and it really is both of those and more. VIPKid was founded in 2013 by Cindi Mi and is ranked by Forbes as the #1 remote work opportunity under their “Top 100 Remote Work Opportunities”. It is a fast-growing company and they are hiring!
This is a quote from their website:
“VIPKid provides an international learning experience to children in China between the ages 4-12. Headquartered in Beijing, the company offers fully immersive one-on-one English language instruction provided online by highly qualified teachers. The curriculum is based on the U.S. Common Core State Standards and uses a flipped-classroom approach to foster creativity and critical thinking skills.”
What Are The VIPKid Requirements?
VIPKid does not hire everyone. They are a leader in online teaching platforms and, in recent months, have become more selective in who they hire and what they market to their parent clients. Here is what VIPKid is looking for:
1. Bachelors degree (minimum – not in progress, but completed)
2. North American & Eligibility to work in the US/Canada + North American passport holder.
3. 1-3 years of teaching-related experience (This can be anything from volunteer work, youth group, Sunday schools, camps, coaching sports or working with kids in any capacity). You do not have to be a certified teacher.
As far as technical requirements, you need a laptop with a working external or built-in webcam. You need a headset and a strong, stable wi-fi connection. The actual speed of the internet connection is recommended to be 20mbps or higher, but lower can still be fine. Most important is stability and access to the router so you can plug-in a wired connection if needed.
In addition, it is important to have good lighting and if you are not in a room with good natural light, you should be able to put some light in front of you to illuminate yourself a little. VIPKid also wants to see an attempt at an educational background – this could be a map, some letters, some color and brightness behind you. There are many examples of what your classroom could look like online.
I still don’t get it. How does it actually work? What does it look like?
VIPKid has created their own video conferencing application on their portal. Once you are hired, you are able to open “slots” in 25-minute intervals on the calendar portion of the portal. This means that in 1 hour, you could teach 2 classes. Once your slot is open, parents can book you for a class. Each Monday, at 12pm Beijing Time, there is something called the “Monday Frenzy” which essentially is when most parents are searching for and booking teachers. They want to book their favorite and are able to do so for a 2-week period on the Monday at 12pm. This means that you’re best time to be booked is during the “Monday frenzy” so it is a good idea to have your slots as open and available as possible for a 2-week period during that time. It shows parents that you are consistent and that’s what they want when looking for a regular teacher. Most often, new teachers are given trial classes by the sales team. This means that the student is “trying out” VIPkid and they have a few opportunities to see if this is a good platform for them before they pay for classes.
Once you are booked, you will see the child’s name in that slot as well as information about them (any info the parents has supplied, feedback from other teachers, and the lesson power point). You enter the classroom just before the teaching time (I usually enter 1-2 minutes prior), and the slides are provided. You just show up and teach the slides! The slides even tell you what to do/say!
After 25 minutes, the class is over, and you say good-bye! You then have 5 minutes to close that classroom and enter your next classroom (if you schedule classes back-to-back). Each class is assigned a classroom, so you are essentially “traveling” from one class to another without actually moving! You are also required to provide feedback on the student to the parents within 12 hours. This means that you can do it within those 5 minutes or you can wait until you are finished all of your classes. I always try to get the feedback done between classes.
The classroom has a large space dedicated to the lesson slides and a video section where you can see the child, and the child can see you. There is also a chat box and some other controls to get support, upload the lesson, and see information about the child as well as the feedback button.
VIPKid Salary – How Much Can I Make?
Yes, they actually pay you! They will also pay you directly into your bank account wherever you live in the world. You can live in any country, as long as you fulfil the requirements above as well as the tech requirements. Pay is on the 15th of each month (and they just rolled out bi-monthly pay also).
The base pay per class is $7-$9 (classes are 25 mins long), that means $14- $18 per hour (2 classes/ hour). Plus, you will get a $1 bonus per class for showing up on time. AND, if you teach 45 + classes (22.5 hours) in a month, you get a $1 bonus per class. So, the pay is between $18 – $22/hour. If you have experience teaching and working with kids and lots of degrees, you will land around $20.50-$22/ hour.
There are other ways of making money as well. If you are willing to teach on short notice (<24 hours before a slot), they will pay you an extra $2/ class. Theoretically, if you only taught Short Notice, then you could be making between $22-$26/hour.
Also, when you are first hired, you will probably teach a lot of trial classes. Trial classes are free classes for students trying out the platform. If the student signs up after taking your class, you will get a $5 bonus!
Finally, VIPKid has a great referral program. If you successfully help an applicant get hired and start teaching, at the time of this post-VIPKid will pay you $100!
Here is my pay slip from September 2018. Of course, I could make more money teaching in an International School, or doing any other profession quite frankly. I never left my house to make this money. I can make it on the road, while traveling, and I can wear what I want, choose my schedule and I get to interact with some sweet kids and have a very flexible schedule. I think the money is quite good (for me, $21/hr) and I make $8.50.class base pay, I always get the bonuses and I refer on the side (You will see the bonuses for that there). So, this was teaching for 80 hours in September, plus some trial signups ($5/signup) and some referrals plus a milestone referral and $20 for a trial signup incentive ( I think, can’t quite remember ). This is all in USD.
This sounds too good to be true! Are they a legit company?
I know, right? Yes! They are a real company. They have offices in the US and in Beijing. They are backed by many investors and even Kobe Bryant is in on this – read the article here!
What Are The Pros And Cons?
As with any company, teaching English online is not all sunshine and roses. If you are looking for a low-stress “work from home” job and you like kids and teaching, then this really is a fantastic opportunity. However, there are things to be aware of and I will outline them below in my list of pro’s and con’s of working for VIPKid:
The pros really do out weight the cons, but it’s good to be aware of what you might find frustrating or difficult.
What are the actual VIPKid hours that I can work?
Here is a screenshot of the hours that I am working this week. I do not work peak hours because I live in the same time zone as the students and I don’t want to work in the evenings. I have built up enough of a following and regular student base that I can work around 2p – 6p (approximately, but it changes week to week slightly).
Now, this is just a small portion of the day. VIPKid is open for bookings from 8:30am – 10:00pm, Monday – Sunday. That does not mean that you will get good booking rates at all those times. VIPKid has expanded into other countries, time zones and has a very large student base. If you were to try to open slots during the day in China, you may get students who are home schooled, on lunch break, students who are not in school yet (below 5), students on holiday, etc…
The hot slots (Peak Times) for bookings are : 6p – 10p, and the Peak Peak times are from 7p – 9p, BJT. These are the times when you are most likely to get booked and when you are starting out, this is when you should have your schedule open the most.
Ok, I Want To Teach English Online with VIPKid! How Do I Get Hired?
Firstly, apply using this link and I will be in touch with you throughout the process OR fill in this form and I will be in touch:
The application process to teach English online with VIPKid used to be a little lengthy and involved, but they have recently changed the process and its much more streamlined and quicker to get hired. I was hired and teaching within 2 weeks. You can do the same if you have the time and focus to put into it.
1. Basically, you will signup on their signup page and input all of your personal information, teaching-related experience, education etc.. Make sure to include everything as accurately and thoroughly as possible.
2. Once you signup, an automated system will scan your application and make sure you hit the requirements. If you do, you will be invited for an interview. Most likely you will have a choice of a “Live” interview or a “Recorded” demo interview. I always suggest applicants choose the live interview because it’s easier to have a real person on the other end. The 1st interview is with a Chinese staff member, most likely in Beijing. They will ask you a few questions about your application and then you will teach a 10-minute demo lesson with them pretending to be a child. Don’t worry, it may seem strange, but once you start it feels quite normal.
HOW TO PASS YOUR LIVE INTERVIEW:
3. If they like you and feel you would be a good fit, you will move to the next stage which is the NEW CERTIFICATION CENTER. Here you will teach a Mock Lesson. This will be a 10 minute lesson taught to a Mock Class Mentor, who is a North American teacher. They will give you feedback and decide if you are ready to teach or if you need another practice of the same Mock. You cannot fail. You will just need to redo if needed.
4. If you are passed right away, then you will upload documents, sign a contract and start teaching! You will create your profile and fill in some forms as well as a police check. Then, open slots and start making money!
If you are interested to teach English online and start working for VIPKid, please get in touch with me (firstname.lastname@example.org) and I would be happy to provide more information, answer any questions and help you get started teaching and making some great money from the comfort of your home! Please signup with VIPKid here, and I will be in touch once you are accepted for an interview!
